The story of ” The SOCKER PLANT POTS”

By Ikea Designer Sarah Fager
“For the SOCKER series, I was inspired by old-fashioned milk jugs, the kind that you still see along small roads in the Swedish countryside. Galvanized steel keeps the products beautiful even after years of intensive use. Most of the products in the series are stackable, which is good both when transporting to the store and when storing at home. Put together, these features make SOCKER a clever, functional and decorative series, for a greener home.”

Milk Paint Add Saltwash Chippy Coastal Makeover

I used powdered Real Milk Paint add Saltwash® for a COOL beachy look on this vintage sewing machine maple desk.

Why Real Milk Paint?

I wanted to achieve a different look than I could get with paints like the chalk types paints or any of the so called premixed milk paints. I used true milk paint made from a combination of casein (a protein found in milk), limestone, and natural plant fillers with pigments.

  • True milk paint would give me a much different finish than ordinarily paint.
  • Milk Paint colors lends itself to greater definition.
  • Milk Paint colors will last for years before fading.

When you get ready try milk paint most of the work is done for you…the people at the Real Milk Paint Company makes milk paint in over 50 colors that I stock at Redposie and sell Real Milk Paint online.

Why ADD Saltwash To Milk Paint?

When you add saltwash to milk paint you get a more natural aged look that can’t be duplicated from just distressing a piece, which is commonly done to other types of paint in an attempt to get that time or weather worn appearance.

I remove the original desk’s top and added pellet wood. A coat of saltwash in milk paint was added and I and sanded down the top peeks that saltwash form once it dries. I didn’t sand to a smooth surface because I wanted the top be somewhat coarse.

Cabinet Painting Inside Drawer using Stain

Cabinet Painting Inside Drawer using Stain

When you’re Cabinet Painting you may need to give a little attention to the inside of the drawers to completely give your piece a refinish look. I get this question a lot, “Do you paint the inside of the drawer”, most of the time I  don’t because I try to save on paint and not use it on places unless I have to. If I can clean or use Lining in a the drawers with contact paper, wrapping paper, even  fabric, I will, but if the drawers have years of use, collecting dirty stains and who knows what else it’s best to do a little Cabinet Painting the inside with paint or a stain. I like using a thick coat of stain like Dixie Belle VooDoo Gel Stain.

Custom Painted

I sold this cabinet, that the customer wanted it custom painted with Wise owl Paint color Nabula
This color features deep shades of denim and of emerald green creating a finish that draws the eyes in no matter where it is in the room.

I have 100’s of paint colors  in my shop that when I sell a piece that I have not painted yet the customers can pick their color and I will custom paint it for then. I keep the customer updated as I take the piece through the painting process by massaging or emailing pictures to then of what the piece is starting to look like. If they feel changes is needed I can do it before the finish piece is completed. There is know surprises when the piece is delivered or when they come to pick it up at the shop.

The drawers in this cabinet needed more than cleaning or lining so first cleaned the inside with TSP and then applied a water base stain from Dixie Belle Paint called Tobacco Road.

Here is a short video of how I did it.

Not sure about how to use Java? Find your answer in General finishes Java Gel Stain FAQs

1) Can Java Gel Stain be used on cabinets that have been painted? I used it on cabinets that had been painted black and white. Thought id give it a try before doing extra steps! Didn’t strip them or anything and this product worked wonderfully going right over the paint. Did four coats on the white and two on the black. Hope this helps!

2)What shade/color is the Java Gel Stain? it’s a deep dark chocolate.
3) I want to paint my kitchen cabinets and they have a satiny feel to them should I use Rust oleum deglosser to take satin finish off or just go over it? Just clean them really well. You can use Surface Prep By Belle Craie . Wiped mine down them applied this with a sock. Several layers were needed. The first layer is like omg what have I done, but after drying a few hours between thin coats the cabinets are beautiful . Then we sealed with a satin clear coat
4) why do you wipe off? The product is very thick and it works best if you use a very thin layer. I have seen the best look comes when you apply a thin layer and then wipe of excess with a lint free rag.
Depending on the look you want.

5) How long do you have to wait between coats? I waited 24 hrs, then sanded (220 grit) very lightly to remove any raised grain or dried dust particles, wiped it down with a slightly damp rag before re-coating. It took me 5 days to complete my project; 3 coats java, 2 coats polyurethane ( sand as above for the polyurethane). THIS ONE IS THE MOST General finishes Java Gel Stain FAQs
